Colin loses record but gets Berlin standard

Last Saturday's 50Km Grand Prix Walk in Dudince in Slovakia brought mixed feelings for Colin Griffin as he achieved the A standard qualifying time for the World Championships in Berlin but also lost his Irish record to Jamie Costin.

The Ballinamore walker finished in fifth position with a time of 3:53.52 behind 2007 World silver medallist Johann Dinez of France (3:38.45) in the European Athletic Association Grand Prix meeting, a race which Colin won in 2007.

Colin Griffin made his return to competitive racing after his disappointment in Beijing by taking runner up position in the Italian 35K Championship in Rosignano.  Colin’s time of 2.41.23 is an official PB for the distance, but it is not a distance he races that often. Having missed some training just after Christmas with the flu, Colin’s coach Sandro Damilano wanted to Colin to  use this event as a strong training effort. It is still a satisfactory performance for Colin who is preparing for a 50km at the end of March in Slovakia.

The event was won by top Italian 20K walker Giorgio Rubino, also now coached by Damilano, who finished fifth in the World Championships in 2007, with Olympic representative Diego Cafagna 3rd some 2 minutes behind Colin.
